Burns shot 69 to finish at 4-under-par 206, one shot clear of J.J. Spaun (69) and Adam Scott (67, matching the day's low round with Carlos Ortiz). Viktor Hovland (70) is 1-under and Ortiz is even par.
Scott and J.J. Spaun, the 18-hole leader, are tied at three-under. Viktor Hovland is the only other player under par after 54 holes. Full leaderboard can be found here on PGATour.com. Here's a look at the players who have the best odds to win this year's tournament following Saturday's third round:
When Viktor Hovland sliced his opening shot in the the third round of the U.S. Open all the way into the bushes, he had no good options. He took a penalty stroke, dropped onto a muddy cart path and managed to hit through some of Oakmont's few remaining trees on his way to a bogey.
Sam Burns make a mockery of Oakmont's brutal challenge with a brilliant round to take the US Open lead. This is the eighth time Burns has held the 36-hole lead since he joined the PGA Tour (his first in a major) and his conversion rate is not good to say the least.
