UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The Trump administration announced Wednesday that it is issuing sanctions against an independent investigator tasked with probing human rights abuses in the Palestinian territories, the latest effort by the United States to punish critics of Israel’s 21-month war in Gaza.
Background: Norway imposed sanctions on Syria in 2011 in response to Assad’s crackdown on protesters that sparked the civil war. The measures prohibited dealing with Syrian financial institutions, including the Central Bank, as well as supplying oil and other products to Syria.
President Donald Trump, appearing fed up, accused the Russian President Vladimir Putin of spouting “bullshit” and said he was “very strongly” considering supporting a punishing sanctions bill to bring Russia to heel.
