On Monday (Feb. 17), the moon reaches what's known as apogee — its farthest point away from Earth.

This month's lunation will disappear in the night sky as it turns to a new moon at 4:45 p.m. PT on Feb. 27, transforming its radiant glow into its blacked-out appearance at its peak.
