The polar vortex is a circular current of strong winds high in the atmosphere over the Arctic that keeps brutally cold air locked up in that region. Recently, though, it weakened and slid southward towards the midlatitudes, spilling cold, Arctic air into heavily populated areas.
ATLANTA — December 1 is the first day of meteorological winter, and right on cue extreme cold and a powerful winter storm are poised to wreak havoc in the eastern half of the US. Over 70 million Americans are currently under weather advisories.
The blast of frigid temperatures follows days of snowy, icy conditions across much of the country. It's bringing the coldest air of the season so far to the Midwest and the Northeast. About 10 record lows are possible Thursday morning, and 20 are likely Friday morning.
An extreme cold alert was issued Thursday for Montgomery County following a forecast of freezing temperatures.
