Scientists at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences have found that what was believed to be a juvenile T.rex skeleton is instead a distant relative, the first of its kind to be found in a full skeleton. Their work has also raised new questions about what is know about that popular predator.

A new study by a North Carolina paleontologist in Raleigh is being called "the biggest dinosaur discovery of the decade."

Governor Josh Stein, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and NC State University announced Thursday that the species, Nanotyrannus lancensis, has been definitively identified in the museum’s “Dueling Dinosaurs” fossil, overturning a long-held belief that the specimen was simply a juvenile T. rex.

Nano Tyrannus lancensis was first identified in the 1940s but later largely dismissed by the paleontological community as just a younger T-rex. But the head of paleontology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences said research has confirmed the differences between the two Tyrannosaurs were far greater than just size.
