After the Houston Astros held a defensive session practicing cut-offs and relay throws on a back field at their spring training complex Friday morning, Jose Altuve walked to the dugout with the position group he has occupied early in camp.

Selflessness is a hallmark of Altuve’s career, but still so rare for someone of his stature. Rafael Devers’ comments on Monday afternoon only accentuate things. That Altuve even accepted the club’s choice to explore another position for him is a luxury few other clubs could ever count on from a Cooperstown-bound player.

Longtime Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve is spending his spring training in the sun, the sand, and the outfield. Altuve opened camp exclusively playing left field. The nine-time All-Star has almost exclusively played second base in the majors, outside of appearances at shortstop.

Brendan Rodgers, a former Gold Glove winner at second base, joins Astros on a minor-league deal as another option at second if Jose Altuve moves to outfield.

Gone are Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker and Justin Verlander, three key members of their 2022 World Series Championship team. In their place are Christian Walker and Issac Paredes, two right-handed power-hitters tasked with protecting left-handed slugger Yordan Alvarez.

The Houston Astros open Grapefruit League play on Saturday. It's unclear when Jose Altuve will make his debut.
