Britain and France have agreed to a pilot plan that will send some migrants who cross the English Channel on small boats back to France as the U.K. government struggles to tamp down criticism that it has lost control of the country’s borders.

Britain on Thursday reached an agreement with France on a pilot programme to return migrants arriving in small boats, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

Paris has agreed to take back individuals who managed to cross the Channel but are not eligible for asylum in the UK. In exchange, London will accept those who qualify for asylum through a legal process.
