The storm’s center was forecast pass north of Puerto Rico, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A formidable Hurricane Erin has intensified into a Category 4 storm, packing maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph), as it battered parts of the Caribbean.

The National Hurricane Center warned that the storm was expected to strengthen as it passed over warm Caribbean waters, according to NPR.
