Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a video released Monday that he will run an independent campaign for New York City mayor, weeks after losing the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani.

Mr. Cuomo, the former governor of New York, has vowed to run a more energetic campaign than he did in the mayoral primary, and aimed to demonstrate that on Tuesday.

The state has expensed more than $20.5 million for the legal defense of Andrew Cuomo and several officials who worked in the executive chamber.

A new independent expenditure group named “New Yorkers for a Better Future Mayor 25” is launching a campaign against Mamdani, with a plan to raise around $20 million, according to a person helping organize the committee. A form filed to the New York State Board of Elections shows the group registered to be active in New York on Tuesday.
