More demonstrations are under way in Los Angeles as the Trump Administration more than tripled the number of troops in the city and Gov. Gavin Newsom sued to stop him.

The Guard’s arrival marks a potentially volatile phase in Trump’s push to ramp up deportations and in his contentious relationship with state and local authorities.

A relative state of calm in Los Angeles began to crumble early Sunday afternoon as demonstrators confronted federal authorities guarding a downtown detention facility where chaos erupted as National Guard soldiers deployed tear gas on an increasingly agitated crowd.

According to experts, Trump is the first President to deploy the National Guard without a request from the state Governor since 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent federal troops to Alabama to protect those partaking in a civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, led by Martin Luther King Jr.

President Trump issued a memo authorizing the National Guard to post up in Los Angeles, but California Gov. Gavin Newsom has called it "illegal."
