NASA has released a visualization of what it looks like to fall into a supermassive black hole, one that’s 4.3 million times the mass of our Sun. Surrounding the black hole is an accretion disk, which is basically a flat, 360° swirling cloud of superheated gas. Closer in, you see photon rings, which form from light that’s orbited the black hole one or more times before escaping. They used Earth’s starry sky as the backdrop to give it some perspective as to what it would look like from our home.
