Acorn barnacles (Balanus sp.) are animals that live along rocky shores throughout the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Barnacles are crustaceans (like crabs, lobsters, shrimp, etc.). After a short time spent as planktonic larva, barnacles will settle to the ocean floor and “glue” their head to a hard surface. They then build a strong shell around their bodies that provides them protection from predators and trap water in their shells, allowing them to withstand being exposed during low tide. Barnacl
