Walt Disney and Rolly Crump introduce the world to the Tower of the Four Winds during an episode of Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color. Designed by Rolly Crump, the Tower of the Four Winds stood outside “it’s a small world” at the 1964–65 New York World’s Fair. A kinetic sculpture of spinning shapes and colors, it became an icon of the Fair and a preview of Disney’s bold design language of the era. | History At Disney

Look at that artwork! Amazing. This clip was from Disney’s latest episode of “We Call It Imagineering” on YouTube. In a post on The Walt Disney Family Museum blog, Rolly Crump described the morning after they presented the Haunted Mansion concepts to Walt: “I got into work at 7:30 and Walt Disney was sitting I my chair, at my desk…!” Walt told Crump how he “didn’t get an ounce of sleep last night” because of his designs, but he had an idea for how they could be used for the Haunted Mansion in th

In the attic scene, you’ll find the Candle Man, a concept from Disney Legend Rolly Crump that was going to be part of the “Museum of the Weird” planned for the attraction’s exit area. One of his inspirations was Jean Cacteau’s Beauty and the Beast from 1946, which depicted some creepy imagery like human arms in the hallways carrying torches and human heads on the sconces surrounding a fireplace. He wanted this idea of “architecture created out of human parts,” and so he drew the sketch of “the c

What I wouldn’t give to see those traveling lights again 😭Honorable mentions for other concepts I considered: Rolly Crump’s creepy hand vase & mushroom people - A little spider in a top hat (like the one playing the organ in a Marc Davis concept) - Words from Leota’s lost incantations (“Harpies and Furies, old friends and new, Blow on a horn, so we'll know that it's you…. Horned toads and lizards, fiddle and strum,Please answer the roll by beating a drum.”)The champagne could possible sit on a

There’s a reason it’s not well lit in that back corner of Pirates of the Caribbean 😂 Rapunzel was actually pretty tame for Rolly Crump, his style was heavily influenced by hippie culture and so embracing… ahem… “natural” portraits was prevalent in his art. He was the lead designer of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride in Walt Disney World, so his style was everywhere in that attraction, including this portrait in Winky’s pub.As for Redd, I love that Marc turned her story around from what it was in those earl
