Bear Island is a 175-acre forest in northern Vermont. It is also a highly-degraded forest that since 2017 has been the site of a long-term restoration project led by yours truly — if you want to read more about this project, check out my book How to Love a Forest — with a primary goal of protecting and sustaining biodiversity. In this video, I’m doing what we foresters call “marking” — marking trees to be cut. On my clients’ land I am usually marking trees and then contracting with a logger to c

It has been SO dry here in Vermont this summer, and it’s really affecting the trees in our forests. Drought stress affects trees in numerous ways, but one of the most interesting is how it limits trees’ ability to photosynthesize. Essentially (and all of this is a simplification of a massively complex and variable process) to harvest carbon, one of the building blocks of the sugars and starches that are synthesized during photosynthesis, trees need to “inhale” air through their stomata — these “

I really can’t overstate what an incredibly serious problem deer overpopulation is — the way that it fundamentally undermines forests’ habitat, health and resilience. In Vermont, where deer are (mostly) only slightly overpopulated, we might be able to lower populations through changing our hunting practices (doe hunting). But where there are more than 40 deer per square mile, research suggests that recreational hunting is not an effective means of lowering that population to a sustainable level.

What’s a wolf tree? I’m reposting this reedited reel from 2025 about something that I really love — wolf trees! In its common use here in Vermont, a “wolf tree” is a tree that was at one time (often for a century or more) growing in the middle of an open field. Now, as forests have regenerated in many of these abandoned agricultural fields, wolf trees are often growing in forests — but they are fundamentally different from other trees in the forest in many ways. The first way is by being older:

Join me for a day in the life of a forester/author/content creator in Vermont! Follow me on a VERY typical day of work, including writing, working for my consulting forestry business marking trees, and making social media content – all while wearing @dickies new Tradebuilt collection. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to build a life full of so many amazing things – the tradeoff is that these days are LONG (I work about 100 hours a week) but this Tradebuilt gear hung with me all the way. Forest management is inherently hard to understand — especially when it involves cutting beautiful trees and changing beautiful forests. What do we do about that? In my experience, one of the most powerful things that you can do is to reach out to the conservation organizations and professionals where you are — people that are engaged in deep relationship and deep responsibility with ecosystems — and listen to them with an open mind. I think that, in many cases, you’ll be surprised what they tel

Can fire be an important tool to protect biodiversity? In Vermont we don’t have many fire-adapted ecosystems, but across the North American continent there are many that are. In these fire-adapted systems, the loss of fire can cause profound and harmful transformations — actually causing them to lose many of the habitats and qualities that make them so unique. It is another example of how “protecting” an ecosystem can mean so much more than just leaving them alone — another example of when it is

What’s a forest “supposed” to look like? In How to Love a Forest, I spend the first chapter “reimagining” forests — exploring the differences between what we think forests should look like and what healthy forests actually look like, using the orchard at Bear Island as a setting. As is so often the case, doing the right thing is “messy”! And that makes it even more beautiful. #forest #forests #forestry #forester #nature #restoration #tree #trees #stem #love | Ethan Tapper

How did I learn all these skills?? My forestry knowledge came from a forestry degree from the University of Vermont, plus almost 15 years of experience. Most of the other skills came from a simple formula: try, fail, try again, ask for help.
